Foxx For Terry
June 23, 1998
by Jeff (Compton)
In a swap of first basemen, the Compton Crips have traded hot-hitting Bill Terry to Manvers for first baseman Jimmie Foxx. For the Crips, this is their first trade ever.
"We're always looking for more offense with this team," said Compton GM Jeff Nyveen. "We sacrificed the hot-hitting Terry for someone who we think will pay off down the road."
Terry, who has been with the Crips for only a few months, has been one of the Crips' leading hitters but was not well-liked by his teammates. Labelled as selfish, greedy, and heartless, Terry was once accused of stealing utility infielder Randy Ready's wallet after a game last month. "Terry can kiss my ass," Ready was quoted as saying. "Nobody here ever liked him." Ready has been benched for the last month for taking a crap in Terry's locker.
Foxx spoke at a late night press conference. "It's great to be on this Compton ballclub with all these great hitters. I know we're all gonna have a great time playing together. But I have only one goal this season. A championship."
